Exploring ChatGPT – The AI-based Chatbot Taking Over the World

Home Blog workflow Exploring ChatGPT – The AI-based Chatbot Taking Over the World
OpenAI, an AI research and deployment company, released an Optimizing Language Model for Dialogue named ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. After the release, it gained great attention, fueling intense discussions across online platforms.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced AI-based chatbot that has taken the world by storm. It can be used for NLP (Natural Language Processing) tasks like translation and text generation. It is based on the GPT-3.5 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3.5) model, one of the most advanced and largest language models currently available. One of the noteworthy features of ChatGPT is its ability to generate human-like text responses to prompts. This makes it useful for a wide range of applications like creating chatbots for customer service, creating personalized content for social media posts, and generating responses to questions in online forums.

How to Use ChatGPT

To use ChatGPT, you need to have access to the OpenAI API. Once you obtain an API key, you can use the ChatGPT model by sending it a prompt (query) in the form of a text string. Then, the model will generate a response based on the information it has been trained on.

Steps to use ChatGPT:

  1. Go to openai.com, register an account and log in (if you already have an account, you can log in directly).
  2. Click on ChatGPT on the bottom left
  3. Click Try it now at chat.openai.com.
Locate the box at the bottom to enter your query.

How Is ChatGPT Trained?

As we mentioned previously, ChatGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM). LLMs are usually trained with massive amounts of data to accurately predict which word comes next in a sentence or a series of words. It was found that increasing the amount of data increased language models’ ability to do more. LLMs can predict the next word in a sentence and the next sentences — somewhat like autocomplete, but at a much larger scale. This ability allows such models to write paragraphs and even entire pages of content. However, LLMs are not proficient enough to always understand the human’s query exactly. ChatGPT has improved the technology with the RLHF (Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback) training.

ChatGPT’s Training

GPT-3.5 was trained on enormous amounts of data about code as well as information from the internet, including sources such as Reddit discussions to help ChatGPT learn dialogue conversations and attain a human style of responding. ChatGPT is also trained using human feedback (a technique called RLHF (Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback) to make AI learn what humans expect when they ask a question. Training the model this way seems revolutionary because it goes beyond just training the LLM to predict the next word. As the ChatGPT model has been trained on massive amounts of text data using RLHF, the model is able to generate responses highly relevant to the prompt, which exhibit a level of understanding and knowledge similar to that of a human. Overall, ChatGPT’s technical principle is based on the architecture of GPT-3, which uses self-attention mechanisms and deep learning algorithms to generate human-like text responses to the prompts. This allows ChatGPT to handle a wide range of natural language tasks like language translation and text generation with high fluency and accuracy.

What Are ChatGPT’s Limitations?

1. Incorrect Answers

ChatGPT is continuously being trained to provide the answers that feel right to humans, because of which the answers can easily trick humans into that the output is correct. Many users discovered that ChatGPT can provide wrong answers, including some that are wildly incorrect. Due to this limitation, Stack Overflow has temporarily banned ChatGPT saying: “Overall, because the average rate of getting correct answers from ChatGPT is too low, the posting of answers created by ChatGPT is substantially harmful to our site and to users who are asking or looking for correct answers.”

2. Limitations on Toxic Responses

As ChatGPT is specifically programmed not to provide toxic or harmful responses, it will avoid answering questions of the same nature.

3. The Quality of Answers Largely Depends on the Quality of Directions

This is one of the major limitations of ChatGPT. The quality of the output largely depends on the quality of the input, meaning expert directions (or prompts) generate better and more accurate answers.

4. Sustainability

On Twitter, there’s a conversation thread regarding how many GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are needed to run ChatGPT. Here, the takeaway is: running ChatGPT is very expensive. Given that ChatGPT is currently a free product, various questions are currently being asked about the sustainability of the technology in the long run.

Is ChatGPT Going to Impact SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Professionals?

As it is about search engine optimization — change is the only constant. From keyword research and strategy to the content creation and reporting, ChatGPT shows enormous potential. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean it’s replacing the jobs of SEO professionals. One thing is certain, irrespective of how powerful AI-powered programs become, they will never be human, meaning they’ll never have our mental quirks or creative ability (though ChatGPT is producing impressive creative work). Creative artificial intelligence systems need both guided training from humans as well as human input to train on, limiting their knowledge of recent events and making work produced by humans an integral part of how they function. These systems also need human fact-checkers. Moreover, AI-generated content is considered to be against Google’s guidelines. Although, anti-detection algorithms are not fail-safe. Therefore, most businesses are serious enough about either employing an SEO professional or outsourcing SEO services and they wouldn’t risk the negative impact of being flagged as spam. AI-driven SEO will also struggle to reconcile the conflicting information and figure out what is accurate. It can be concluded that for the foreseeable future, it seems there’ll be a need for humans to oversee AI-driven SEO efforts, offer creative input, provide strategic direction, and make adjustments on the basis of shifting search tides.

Is ChatGPT Free to Use?

Currently, ChatGPT is free to use. All you need to do is register a ChatGPT account in the supported regions and countries to use it. Because of the large number of users, there may be errors such as ChatGPT network errors because ChatGPT is at capacity right now. If you encounter any of these problems, it is recommended to switch to a new account.

 Conclusion

The world will continue to change, and the change that is currently coming on this front is massive. It needs collaborative and visionary leaders who lead the way. Therefore, ChatGPT is not likely to replace the jobs of people. While it is a powerful tool to automate conversations, it is still a long way from being able to replace the interpersonal and creative skills of human beings. GPT technology is best used for augmenting tasks, not replace them. If used correctly and embraced, ChatGPT can free up time for people to focus on higher-value tasks that need more problem solving and creativity.
