If you’re an ecommerce business owner, a web designer or developer, or someone who is looking to start an online store, make product visibility a priority. Simply put, when a potential customer searches for the products you sell, not only should your product appear in the search results, but also provide, correct, complete and relevant information to persuade the customer to go ahead and click, and hopefully complete the buying process.

Boosting product visibility is simple. With an SEO plugin, you can change the descriptions and titles that appear for your products, making them more impactful and search-friendly. Additionally, keep the attributes, tags and categories crisp to display relevant and complete information instantly.
Alright, now let’s dive deeper into this. We’ll look at 4 WooCommerce tips that you can apply to increase product visibility and enhance user experience.
3 WooCommerce Tips to Boost Product Visibility
Our goal with optimizing product visibility is to help search engines better index our products, while also making sure the product titles and listings are helpful for our shoppers. Long product titles before the listing make it difficult for shoppers and search engines to know what exactly they can expect on our product pages. So, let’s fix this, and more! Here are 3 simple changes you can make to enhance your product visibility with WooCommerce:
1. Product Categories
Optimizing the product categories and titles makes it easy for shoppers with neat product archives. Shoppers can easily find the relevant information they need and buying decisions can be made quicker. To create category titles, log in to your WordPress dashboard. Here’s assuming you have already installed Yoast or another SEO plugin.
- Go to Products > Categories
- Create a short title for the category that will completely display on sidebars and search menus
- Add a description with relevant Keywords. These keywords can then be linked on relevant website pages at a later stage
- If you’re using Yoast, you can go to the newly created category and click on Edit to add a longer description and title
These product titles and categories will be displayed on search engines.
Once you have set up the relevant categories, you can now go ahead and add them to the site’s menu. You can create a drop-down category menu making it easier for customers to navigate through your website and achieve relevant results, thus a better website experience.
Furthermore, these categories will also help you display products on your homepage with the help of WooCommerce widgets. This will further improve your ecommerce website’s user experience.
Optimizing categories and titles will help search engines find, index and display the right information and boost visibility, and at the same time greatly improve the on-site experience for users.
2. Product Attributes
Optimizing product attributes helps you sell more, boost search traffic and highlight similar products across your ecommerce website. While it is possible to use the same attributes across your product categories, using unique attributes for every category boost SEO and product visibility. Say, for example, if you have a category for Table Lamps on your website and one of the material attributes is ‘Wooden’, WooCommerce will by default create an archive for ‘Wooden’. In this case, everything under the ‘Wooden’ attribute will display in that archive, be it coasters, picture frames, etc. This takes away from being targeted in terms of search.
Creating specific and unique attributes can help fix this. So instead of ‘materials’ being the attribute, you can make it ‘table lamp materials’ or ‘coaster materials’. You can additionally add the term ‘wooden’ to these individually.
Why should we do this? When you create unique attributes for your product listings you can increase the chances of selling by using a single product page with variations such as colour, material and so on, instead of creating multiple product pages for the same product with the only difference being the attributes like colour and material. This makes it easier for your customers to shop because they don’t have to make the effort of going to multiple pages to find what fits their needs the best. One page with multiple variations is easier to make a buying decision.
Look at the picture above, when you log in to your WordPress dashboard, you can go from Products > Attributes and add terms for each attribute you have created. When adding terms keep the title and description short for on-site display and use the SEO plugin to create longer descriptions and titles for better searchability.
3. Product Tags
Product tags are like keyword hints that you can populate for your customers and search engines to find you. Tags, unlike categories, do not form a hierarchy of your products and neither, like attributes, help build variable products. Say for example your category is table lamps, and the attribute is wooden. You can create a tag ‘Wooden Table lamps’ and assign it to all wooden table lamps on your website. This is more likely to be the keyword people are using to search the product and creating tags helps search engines to crawl and index better.
This helps bring more of your products to appear on search engines and is more relevant for potential customers.
How do you create product tags?
- Login to your WordPress dashboard, go to Products > Tags
- Add Tag title and a brief description
- Go to Edit and add a longer description and title for the SEO plugin. Click on Save
Lastly, remember we keyword-based descriptions for Product categories? You can now link these keywords to your tags.
