As the saying goes – The first impression is the last impression. In today’s world of competitiveness and reduced attention span, it is very important to have a catchy and impressive landing page on your WordPress website. Investing in building an impressive landing page can act as a great marketing tool which can then act as your precursor to increased customer base and sales.
In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a landing page for your WordPress website. However, let us first understand the basic difference between a landing page and your website’s homepage.
What is a landing page?
If you’re a business website, a landing page is a web page designed specifically to boost sales on your website. For a non-business website, a landing page can be used to target an increase in the subscriber base.
A landing page is usually used with social media campaigns, paid marketing, and email marketing campaigns to generate leads. Users visiting your website from these campaigns will be redirected to the landing page instead of the main homepage.
Difference between homepage and landing page
This brings us to the next question at hand, the difference between a homepage and a landing page.
Your website’s homepage is the main web page of your website. It is the webpage you see after you’ve landed on the website by entering the domain name in the web browser. The purpose of a homepage is to engage your website visitors, to help them navigate the different website pages, and if you’re a business – encouraging customers to make a purchase.
A landing page on the other hand is a standalone webpage that is displayed to users when they visit your website through various campaigns or other traffic sources. The purpose of a landing page is to convert visitors to users with a definite call to action. Moreover, you can also link your landing page from the navigation bar on your website’s homepage.
Apart from this, the core difference between a homepage and a landing page is that there can only be one homepage on your website whereas you can design multiple landing pages.
Some of the examples of a landing page include:
- A subscriber page
- Paid advertising and social media campaigns page
- A webpage for a new product launch or service
How to create a landing page with WordPress
Now that you’ve seen what a landing page is, it is time to learn how to design a landing page for your WordPress website.
You can create a landing page by editing your website theme and coding in HTML, and CSS. However, this would require in-depth coding knowledge and can be risky if the code goes wrong. Another way of creating a custom landing page on your website is to use plugins or page builders. In this tutorial, we’ll be creating a landing page on our WordPress website.
Follow these steps to create your landing page:
Step 1: Once you’ve purchased your domain and hosting. Log in to your Bluehost hosting account by entering your credentials.
Step 2: You will be redirected to your Bluehost dashboard. On the ‘My Sites’ tab, you can see a general overview of your WordPress website.
Note: We’ll assume you’ve already created your WordPress website and now want to add your first additional landing page
Step 3: Navigate to the ‘Home’ tab. Here you will see a guided Bluehost editor to help you easily customize your WordPress website by adding pages, logo, plugins, and much more
The Bluehost guided editor helps you keep a track of the recommended tasks, as well as, skipped and completed tasks.
To create your landing page, you must first log in to your WordPress dashboard. Click on the ‘Log in to WordPress’ button
Step 4: You will be redirected to your WordPress dashboard. Here on the left-hand sidebar, you will see a ‘Bluehost’ tab. This is similar to the Bluehost dashboard and helps you add content to your website, easily build and design pages, measure and optimize the performance, manage your hosting, boost your website traffic and much more.
Since we are creating a landing page – we will focus on how to create a new page.
Go to the ‘Bluehost’ tab -> ‘Home’ -> ‘Content’ and click on the ‘New Page’ button
Step 5: After you click on the ‘New Page’ a new blank page is created. If you’ve already added a website theme, you can choose and import one of the templates for your landing page. All you need to do is modify the content and you are good to go.
However, if you want to design your landing page from scratch, you can do so with the in-built WordPress Gutenberg editor that allows you to easily add blocks, drag and drop them, as well as, customize them.
The below image is a draft layout of how to add content and block to your website page design. There are blocks for adding content, heading, marketing button, call to action button, social media links, image and video embeds and much more. All you need to do is search for what you want and add it to your page. Drag and drop the content as you want and arrange it.
Once you’re satisfied with how your landing page looks, you can hit the publish button.
Note: You can make changes to your landing page even after it is published. When you don’t want to link to this page, you can revert it to ‘Draft’ and ‘Publish’ it again when you want.
After you publish your landing page, you can add its link to your paid or email marketing campaigns and social media campaigns.
This is how your landing page will look to the user who clicks on the link:
