Duplicate content is content that appears in multiple places on the Internet. This “unique site” is defined as a site with a unique web address (URL). So, if the same content appears in multiple web addresses, you have duplicate content. Duplicate content isn’t technically a penalty, but it can sometimes affect search rankings. Because there is a lot of content that Google describes as “very similar” in different places on the web, it can be difficult for search engines to determine the best type of content for a particular search term. 


In many cases, website owners do not intend to create duplicate content. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. In fact, some estimate that up to 29% of their websites contain duplicate content. Let’s take a look at some ways in which duplicate content gets created and how to fix it.  


  1. Variations in URL

URL components such as click tracking and some search codes can cause duplicate content problems. This can be a problem because of the order in which the parameters appear in the URL and the parameters themselves. For instance: 


 www.widgets.com/blue-widgets?c… is a duplicate of www.widgets.com/blue-widgets?c…&cat=3 “class=”redactor-autoparser-object”>www . widgets.com/blue-widgets is a copy of www.widgets.com/blue-widgets?cat=3&color=blue. 


Similarly, session IDs create duplicate content. This is done by assigning each user who visits your website a unique session ID, which is stored in the URL. Print content types can also cause duplicate content issues when creating multiple page types. The lesson here is that it is best to avoid adding URL parameters or other types of URLs whenever possible (internal information can be passed through scripts). 


  1. HTTP vs. HTTPS or WWW vs. WWW Pages 

If a website has different versions of “www.site.com” and “site.com” (without the “www” prefix) and the same content is available, this will work in both versions. Generally called Meta Noindex, Follow and technically known as content = ” noindex, follow ”, this meta robots tag can be added to the HTML title of each page to be removed from the search engine index.

This meta robot tag allows search engines to find links on a runner but prevents them from including those links in their indicator.
